East Windsor Softball Wins District 12 Title

12-year-olds advance to sectionals

While they were happy to win the District 12 softball title, the East Windsor 12-year-olds didn't have an overly big victory celebration after clinching the title on July 1.

Considering how good these girls are, however, they probably will get another chance to celebrate.

East Windsor defeated Bordentown, 7-0, at home on July 1 to clinch the title. East Windsor advances on to the sections, which will be held in North Wall, starting on Tuesday.

"Huge celebrations just aren't them," East Windsor manager Bill Giampolo said. "They are pretty reserved. They respect the other team too much to go nuts."

Winning tournaments also isn't exactly something new for this bunch of girls. This team won the District 12 title while playing as 10-year-olds two years ago and went on to win the state championship.

That was as far as that team could go. Now, as 12-year-olds, the tournaments will continue until there is a world champion.

East Windsor got the first step out of the way by winning what is usually the toughest district in the state. Not only did East Windsor win all four games it played on the way to the title in the double-elimination tournament, it did so by outscoring the opposition by a combined 30-0.

"That's some good defense, ain't it?" Giampolo noted. "That's good defense and some solid pitching. Don't know what more to say about that."

Angela Giampolo did the pitching for East Windsor and allowed just one hit, a single in the second. That baserunner was then thrown out by Holly Bridgman as she attempted to steal.

"She threw her out by five feet," Giampolo noted. "It was a heck of a throw. It wasn't even a close play."

As good as East Windsor was pitching and fielding, the game was still scoreless going into the fourth.

"You wouldn't have known the score and how tense the game was by the way the girls acted," Giampolo said. "It was scoreless in the fourth of the district championship game and the girls acted just like it was any other inning."

Angela Giampolo led off the fourth with a single. Ally Huelbig and Holly Bridgman followed with walks to load the bases.

"You could see the pressure getting to the pitcher," Giampolo noted.

Brighid Douglas then delivered a two-run single.

By the end of the inning, East Windsor led, 5-0. In proper perspective, East Windsor led by five more runs than it allowed in the entire tournament.

East Windsor added on two more runs, got the final outs and collected its trophies and District 12 championship banner.

"We then went back to my house and had a little party," Giampolo said.

It was a nice celebraton, but hardly a crazy one. These East Windsor girls have won before. They also plan on winning again.
