East Windsor Two Wins Away From Little League Softball World Series

Girls will play New York in Mid-Atlantic title game today

The 12-year-old girls from East Windsor are happy to be in Bristol, Conn., playing for a chance to earn a spot in the Little League Softball World Series.

According to East Windsor Manager Bill Giampolo, however, "The girls aren't just happy to be here. They want to win. They have big goals."

East Windsor moved closer to those big goals with an 11-2 win over Maryland on Thursday night. That victory puts East Windsor into the Mid-Atlantic title game against New York on July 29.

East Windsor defeated Maryland behind the pitching of Sam Dolan and Angela Giampolo. Dolan was the starting and winning pitcher.

Brighid Douglas had three hits and scored two runs. Kelli Swedish had two hits, two runs scored and a RBI. Nicolette Garthe added two RBI.

Because of the setup of the tournament, East Windsor played Maryland on consecutive days. Maryland defeated East Windsor, 7-6, on July 27.

"That was a tough one for us because the game didn't matter," Giampolo said. "The seeding for the final round was already set."

East Windsor, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware all played each other once. The team with the worst record (Delaware) was eliminated. The other four teams were seeded based on their records. East Windsor was the top seed and Maryland was locked into the fourth spot before it played on Wednesday.

"Maybe we needed a little setback to get us going again," Bill Giampolo said.

Douglas had three of East Windsor's six hits. East Windsor pitched three girls two innings each.

East Windsor was setting up for the game on Thursday. Clearly, it was the right move.

East Windsor was able to set up the pitching the way it liked by clinching the top seed with an 11-1 win over Pennsylvania on Tuesday. This game was stopped after four innings by the 10-run blowout rule.

Angela Giampolo worked all four innings on the mound to record the win. She also had a hit and two runs scored.

Ally Huelbig had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Holly Bridgman had two hits, a run scored and RBI. Swedish had a hit and two runs scored. Garthe had a hit and two runs scored.

"Hopefully, we can continue this," Bill Giampolo said.

Continue the winning all the way to Portland, Ore.
