Yankees' Alex Rodriguez to Play for Trenton Thunder This Weekend

A-Rod may return to the Yankees after the series, if he isn't suspended by MLB first.

It looks like Alex Rodriguez is going to play baseball again this season.

It just might not be with the New York Yankees.

Rodriguez will play two games for the Trenton Thunder this weekend, according to The Huffington Post. He played a simulated game on Thursday, and will take the field against Reading on Friday and Saturday, according to the report.

Rodriguez underwent hip surgery in January, and played 13 minor league games with three minor league teams, including the Thunder, before complaining about quadriceps tightness.

The Yankees said an MRI he took on July 21 showed a Grade 1 strain.

Rodriguez then consulted a doctor outside the organization without permission, who said he couldn’t detect an injury.

That doctor, Michael Gross, was reprimanded by the State of New Jersey in February for not properly supervising an unlicensed employee, who prescribed hormones and non-anabolic steroids, according to espn.com.

Rodriguez and the Yankees have negotiated a return, but Major League Baseball may suspend him for his association with Biogenesis of America, the Florida-based clinic accused of distributing banned performance enhancing drugs to players, according to Huffington Post.

The three-time MVP is in the sixth-year of his $275 million, 10-year contract, which makes him the highest paid player in baseball. This year, the Yankees owe him $28 million, although they are reportedly seeking a way to void his contract since he hasn’t played a major league game all season.

The Thunder is 56-55 heading into tonight’s game. All three games in the series are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. starts, at home. Information on how to purchase tickets is available on milb.com.
