Families in need of housing in central New Jersey can now apply for a new home through Habitat for Humanity's Millstone Basin affiliate.

The organization works with families living in substandard housing to realize the dream of home ownership. Families are selected based on their need—typically, selected families earn between 40 percent and 55 percent of the U.S.’s median income.

Eligible families are also considered based on their willingness to help in the construction of their home, which amounts to 350 hours of labor with Habitat. The organization helps families finance their new homes through no-interest loans.

“Habitat is not a hand out but a hand up,” Anthony Infosino, the Millstone Basin affiliate president, said. “The partner family works on the house’s construction with us and purchases the completed hose from us via a no-interest mortgage.”

So far, the Millstone Basin branch has built nine houses—seven on Evan Avenue in East Windsor, a duplex in Robbinsville, and a house in downtown Hightstown. In total, Habitat for Humanity International has built or repaired over 600,000 homes worldwide.

Families who are interested in applying can send an e-mail to family@habitatmba.org. Applications are accepted through Wednesday, July 31.
