that is hilarious! video gamers! wait till the jack booted thugs kick in the door and kill a kid. iRead More wonder if these types of police are needed in this day and age. the real danger is the police, the video gamers are lost in the digital age and enjoy a good prank. most of you people are afraid to live, these cops are locked and loaded and looking for a shoot out. police procedure needs to be re-examined. bearing false witness......

Both the jackass players should be fined. these are the same kids that shoot up the schools whenRead More they're bored with fantasy. The beach is right down the block and your lazy fat ass kid sits on the couch all day gaming. pathetic.

Coffeenut under the criminal statutes in effect today the sale of marijuana is still against the lawRead More in NJ so the police actually were minding their own business. I have been told that often the police start with pot buys and then turn those sellers into informants who carry the undercovers up to those that provide more dangerous drugs to the public. That seems to make sense. Perhaps your emotions are a little too influenced by your desire to see the substance made legal? You are aware that there is a problem in NJ at this point with people often dying due to narcotics, right?
Coffeenut April 23, 2014 at 10:35 am
Marynary yes it still is illegal in NJ. It shouldn't be. And my wanting it legalized is a non-issue.Read More My point is, let us look at what caused the cop to get shot. He was out there in a parking lot trying to "trick" someone into breaking the law. Someone could have been arrested and had their life ruined because of this cop. All over a harmless medicinal plant. The cop, albeit doing his "job", was out there looking for trouble. You get what you give in life. Hard for me to feel sorry for someone who was shot while he was trying to arrest and ruin someone else's life.

no sting no shooting...
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Porter gladstone April 23, 2014 at 10:47 am
mob mentality. people on this thread dont even understand the ruling. tt, the comparison toRead More sports is absurd. baseball 8% black. hockey? swimming? etc. i dont hear complaints by minority leaders complaing about every facet of life. there is a belief that low test scores , a dearth of black ceo's , etc must be explained by some measure of systemic discrimination. women do it. minorities. heck go to any youth sports program and youll find parents complaing about playing time and favoritism. people complain. sometimes theyre right.
Old Pizza April 23, 2014 at 10:54 am
College admission should be based on scholastic achievement, period.
Observor April 23, 2014 at 11:03 am
One of the primary reasons blacks lag in admission to elite colleges without affirmative action isRead More that a disproportionate number of them come out of horror show urban school systems where they are trapped by an unholy alliance of the teacher unions and the Democrat party. The DTC keeps the unions working regardless of incompetence and in return the unions bankroll the DTC with their members' dues money. Affirmative action is just a way to paper over that "inconvenient truth."

Dickie also can't stand not seeing his name in the paper once a week, so he'll be "for" orRead More "against" something just for the sake of issuing a press release. Sending out a camera crew to interview him just enables him further. Forty years and counting. He's the poster child for Term Limits.

the only difference I see between Codey and Christie is that one is wearing an orange cone and theRead More other one is still renting them out at will - regardless, the longer Julie Herrman remains at Rutgers, the longer Rutgers's integrity is going to be under a public cloud
Clyde Z April 23, 2014 at 07:59 am
her hiring was a joke, I mean they said they did a background check: must not have used GoogleRead More search because they've listed her troubles before her hire at Rutgers. Not to mention that she "lied" on her application. I've had co-workers fired after a month, months and in another case years after their hire due to lies on their application. Hermann's lies could/should have been cought by simple 10th grade investigation
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 11:08 am
OK, so it doesnt bother you at all that the textbook publishers will now be able to put out only aRead More few curricula, all aligned to the same standards, which they determined themselves, which will reduce their costs tremendously. And you trust that what they put in will be OK. And have YOU actually read the standards, or only a few snippets, which YOU are relying on for your opinion? I havent read them all. I have read comparisons of some of the old standards, side-by-side with the new standards, and it seems that whoever wrote the standards did not have the gift for brevity and clarity that one would hope for. Also, the gag order on teachers and administrators really makes it difficult to determine what educators really think, wouldn't you say? I have read many articles from CC supporters that talk about an expanded school day so that teachers have time for the in-services they need to learn the "new techniques required" to teach the common core. So it doesnt sound to me like even supporters of the CC think this is just regular teaching, at a different level. But unfortunately, we can only find out what the "new techniques" are by interrogating our children after the fact, since teachers - who don't like the CC in general - cant tell us why. My vice-principal sis-in-law refers to "Children of the Core" and it is just as creepy as it sounds. And as you keep going back to local-control of curricula - the states have individually signed contracts with Pearson Publishing, which include gag orders on teachers and administrators. That "control" was never given to the local level - schools are bound by it whether they like it or not. That is at least the case with the contract in NYS, although I can't believe the other State's contracts vary much from this EXTREME protection of a private company. How can there be local control, if parents are not allowed to hear from the teachers and administrators of their local schools? You may think I am mindlessly parroting, but I wonder why you are so mindlessly defending. At least all the other people involved seem to have gotten paid by Bill and Melinda Gates. Oh, and that chirping noise from the teachers opposed to CC? Maybe that's the sound of people decid ing to keep their jobs.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 11:13 am
I could give you the requirements for an International Baccalaureate, which is offered at BiotechRead More and a few select HS's in NJ, but it is not really on point, and your fingers can google just as easily as mine. The IB is only for the highest level students. It would not be appropriate to make it the default for all students.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 11:17 am
..and just a thought, but even though the CC standards "require" critical thinking skills,Read More it does not mean that the curricula developed by the textbook publishers without input from child development experts will succeed in imparting these skills. I can SAY I require good nutrition in my (imaginary) school lunch room, and that all children will leave adequately nourished, but you won't find out for 12 years if your kids have gotten adequate nutrition in my school lunchroom, because every year I change my mind on how to measure it.

This is a country founded on the principles of freedom and individualism. It is each person's rightRead More to believe or not believe, to be whom they want to be. The publicly owned schools should not show allegiance to any religion because doing so suppresses individual freedom and individuality. Our Founding Fathers did not envision America as "one nation under God" but rather an America that is for everybody, regardless of personal faith.
Martin B. Brilliant April 23, 2014 at 10:47 am
@Spooner: Agreed and understood. The "equal protection" clause of the FourteenthRead More Amendment, enacted after the Civil War, changed the impact of the Bill of Rights. Up to that point, the Bill of Rights restricted only the national government, and state governments could do as they pleased. But from then on, the states were supposed to be equally bound by the Bill of Rights, though, as you point out, it was a long time coming.
SILENT WOLF April 23, 2014 at 11:12 am
It is written " One nation under God"... You have your right in your mind to believeRead More anything you desire , just don't try and changed things here in America.. If your God IS a rock then, believe in that rock . We as a Christian nation believe in god in the heavens , that this world came about from God who then gave up his only begotten Son .So the next time you pledge allegiance to the flag think of your own God the rock in your home or for that matter some of you believe in your new messiah in Washington who to would if he could change the pledge .. OK...

I just hope his kids don't pick up his bullying and disrespect that he shows towards others. ButRead More after them watching him and seeing that he can do it without any consequences I don't see how they cannot turn out like him. We have a huge problem with bullying and studies show that it has an affect on children until at least middle age. Way to go Council you just let everyone know that bullying is an acceptable form of behavior.

At least they are bi-partisan. An inappropriate Democratic role model last year and an inappropriateRead More Republican one this year. I don't object to celebrities being role models, but why can't they choose someone who is a noted philanthropist or some other positive figure? I wonder how much someone paid for this honor. Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. I don't always agree with her but that is what makes the world go round. I have followed Grace' comments on numerous subjects for a long time and have always found her to be very level headed, intelligent, fair, and yes sometimes she tries to defuse things with humor or when something or someone trips her funny switch.
