Tim Pernetti's resignation is "appropriate and necessary" Gov. Chris Christie said Friday. The governor thanked Pernetti for his contributions as athletic director of Rutgers University, and said university president Robert L. Barchi made the right leadership decision in seeking new leadership for the athletics department. “This entire incident was regrettable and while it has damaged the reputation of our state University, we need to move forward now on a number of fronts which provide great opportunities for Rutgers’ future," Christie said, in a prepared statement. Rutgers released a letter of resignation today from Pernetti to Barchi in which he said that he'd seen video of Rice verbally and physically abusing players, brought his …

Rutgers University Athletics Director Tim Pernetti announced Wednesday that head basketball coach Mike Rice has lost his job following the release of a video showing Rice shoving and kicking players and using obscene and offensive language during practices. Do you think firing Rice was the right move? Pernetti has confirmed that the video was brought to his attention in fall 2012, brought to him by former director of player development Eric Murdock. An independent investigation was launched at that time, and Pernetti ordered a three-game suspension of Rice in December, and fined him $75,000. Rice was also ordered to attend anger management counseling and was monitored at practices upon returning from his suspension. The video rocketed to …

The NCAA men's basketball tournament begins Tuesday. Here's clickable help.
OK, now it cranks up for real. March Madness is perhaps the most frenzied postseason in all of sports. The NCAA men's basketball tournament each year captures the national imagination. No New Jersey teams will be competing in March Madness this year, as Rutgers extended its ironman streak of missing the tournament to 22 years in a row. Tonight, the action begins, with play-in games featuring Liberty (15-20) vs. North Carolina A&T (19-16) and Middle Tennessee State (28-5) vs. Saint Mary's (27-6).
