From a toy drive to a Christmas tree sale, some of Hightstown’s finest and bravest are working to get you ready for the holidays. The Hightstown Borough Police Benevolent Association Local 283 has begun collectiong for their annual “Toys 4 Kids” toy drive, which will end Dec. 7. As part of the “Toys 4 Kids” program, the PBA is collecting new, unwrapped toys for underprivileged children in the area, “allowing the children to enjoy the holiday season by receiving new toys.” Additionally, gifts left over from the toy drive will be donated to the Sandy Relief Efforts. Township Committee said they would revisit the permanent location of the holiday display next year.
Main Street in Cranbury will be adorned with more than just a Christmas tree this year after the Township Committee unanimously approved Monday the addition of a menorah to the holiday decorations. This year both a Christmas tree and a menorah will be displayed in Memorial Park, however the Committee said they would discuss a possible change in location next year. Memorial Park honors veterans from World War I through the Vietnam war, and is the current location of a Christmas tree. For the Christmas-celebrating set, it's an eternal question: Real or fake? Trees, that is. In your youth, do you remember going with Dad to the Christmas Tree vendor at the edge of town? Purchasing it? Lugging it home? Setting it up in the living room? Do you remember the smell? That pine scent was better than any Pine Sol bottle. And, it just smelled like Christmas. Three weeks after Christmas, the family finally decided to throw out the tree. Or, at least, the branches of the tree, as about 90 percent of the needles didn't make it out the front door. As you grew older, the family decided a fake tree made more sense. It was a one-time purchase. And, every year, you brought it out from the attic, clicked the branches into the center base. …
