Hightstown Girls Cross Country Off to Best Start in Years

Rams improved to 6-2.

With a 6-2 record, the Hightstown High School girls cross country team is having one of its best seasons in years. "I have been involved coaching the girls for nine years and this is the best team we've had," said Hightstown Coach Tom McCafferty. According to McCafferty, it wasn't a total surprise. Hightstown had a good core group of runners back. Add in a pair of sophomores that keep dropping their times and you get some wins. "Hannah Schmitt is a sophomore that never ran cross country before," McCafferty said. "She has been our number five runner all year and she keeps closing on the top four." Sarina Sokoloff, another sophomore, is someone else who keeps lowering her times. "She finished last season running in the high 23 minutes," …

Hightstown Boys Cross Country Off to 7-1 Start

Mintz proves to be a key new runner.

The Hightstown High School boys cross country team is off to another great start. With its three wins in a quad meet on Sept. 27, Hightstown improved to 7-1 on the season. Hightstown defeated Allentown (20-38), Notre Dame (27-30) and Ewing (19-44). "This is kind of the same place we were last year," Hightstown Coach Tom McCafferty said. "We're 7-1 going into the weekend of the Shore Coaches Invitational." The surprising part of Hightstown's success is the Rams have been able to keep winning without Ashwin Narayan in the lineup. "He figured to be our number two runner and he is still hurt," McCafferty said. "We're hoping to get him back for the championship races." Fortunately, not all of Hightstown's luck has been bad. "Zander Mintz, a …

Hightstown Cross Country Bringing Back Experienced Girls

Season opening Sept. 10 at Cherokee Classic.

While the Hightstown High girls cross country team did lose one of its best runners to graduation, the talent and experience coming back has Coach Tom McCafferty excited. "We lost Megan Mitchell, but I still have the rest of the team coming back," McCafferty said. "They all made great improvements over the track season. Hopefully, that will transfer into the cross country season." Cross country runners have one big advantage over the athletes in other sports at a school like Hightstown High. Hightstown has winter and spring track teams. After the cross country season ends, the runners can continue in distance events the rest of the school year. Hannah Foss, a sophomore, kept running after last year's cross country season ended. "She was …
