Whether you are a parent, educator, student, or simply a citizen, we were all shocked and saddened by the horrific attack that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. Mass attacks, especially against children, are beyond comprehension. I want to assure all of our families that the safety of our students and staff is the top priority in our schools. Although I cannot discuss our security procedures in detail, I can write that we have a comprehensive plan for admitting and monitoring visitors to the building. Also, each month, your children rehearse what to do during an emergency and we have recently updated our Crisis Management Manuals and procedures. Local election winners offered words of thanks to their constituencies in East Windsor, Hightstown, and Cranbury
David Cook, Cranbury Township Mayor I would like to thank all the residents of Cranbury for their generosity and support. It would be impossible to be a competent steward of Cranbury without the input from its residents. By being elected for another three years we, the current Township Committee, will be able to see through a number of large projects and capital improvements. Power has been restored to all East Windsor schools, according to an announcement from the East Windsor Regional School District. Students should report to their school at the regular time on Tuesday. All schools have a half day Tuesday due to Election Day. Hightstown High School students will be following the “D” day schedule. The class periods for the day will be 4-2-3-8-6-7.

Cranbury and East Windsor schools are open Monday, with modifications for some
Five East Windsor Regional School District schools have power, but Melvin H. Kreps School still does not, according to an announcement by the district. Like many in East Windsor, district officials are unsure when power will be restored to the middle school. However, school will be in session, with some modifications. The elementary schools will follow the regular schedule. Hightstown High School will have a 1/2 session day on Monday and middle school students will have their classes in the high school in the afternoon. High school students must report to school by 7:25 a.m. and will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Kreps middle school students will begin their 1/2 session day at 10:45 a.m. at the high school. Hightstown High School is moving up in the ranks. The school was listed in 161st place—up from the 180th spot in 2010—on the just-released biennial ranking of 328 public high schools in the state by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. NJ Monthly Magazine’s 2012 rankings of the top public high schools will be featured in the September issue, which hits newsstands on Aug. 28. The magazine notes that the average class size at Hightstown High School is 23.2 and that the combined average SAT score is 1531. East Windsor Regional School District recently received a high performing designation after a state-mandated performance review, according to a news release. The state’s Quality Single Accountability Continuum reviews the district’s instruction and program, fiscal management, governance, operations, and personnel. The district ranged from 80 to 100 percent in the review, the release said. “The School District is very pleased with these results and will continue to remain focused on providing the best education possible for our students,” the release said. Hightstown residents can apply to fill the vacant seat through January 2013.
A Hightstown representative for the East Windsor Regional School District's Board of Education has resigned, and the board is accepting applications to fill the vacant seat. After serving on the board since April 1992, Susan Lloyd said she resigned, effective June 30, because of family matters. “This was not an easy decision as I have truly enjoyed my time and have found it interesting, challenging and rewarding,” Lloyd said in an email to Patch. “However, family is the first priority.” Lloyd outlined several of the board’s accomplishments and challenges over the years. The Board of Education thanked the organization at last week's meeting.
The East Windsor Board of Education accepted donations from the Hightstown Women’s Club to the local schools, and thanked the organization for its generosity, according to a news release. The Women’s Club gave $625 to the vocal program at Hightstown High School, $625 to the instrumental program and $200 to the principal’s discretionary fund at Melvin H. Kreps Middle School, $100 to the principal’s discretionary funds at Perry L. Drew Elementary, Ethel McKnight Elementary and Grace N. Rogers Elementary, and $300 to the principal’s discretionary fund at Walter C. Black Elementary, the release said.
