Voters Cast Their Ballots in Hightstown and Cranbury

Poll workers projected a large turn out of voters in Hightstown and Cranbury, and not all were from the area

Hightstown Borough moved their polling location last week from Hightstown High School to the First Presbyterian Church. Despite the move, Borough Clerk Debra Sopronyi said residents were well aware of where to go to vote, and there was a significant turnout Tuesday. According to Sopronyi, usually on Election Day there is an ebb and flow of voters depending on the time of day. This year, however, she said there was a constant stream of voters. One such voter was Dan Buriak, who said he voted across party lines for the Hightstown Borough Council election based on candidates’ experiences that he felt would be valuable for the position. He said the borough hall’s location and party affiliations, while hot button issues in the media, were not …

Letter to the Editor: League of Women Voters Regrets Serrano's Lack of Participation

League of Women Voters President Deborah Macmillan responds to Hightstown Borough Council candidate George Serrano's Letter to the Editor

Dear editor, The League of Women Voters of East Windsor-Hightstown regrets that Mr. Serrano chose not to participate in last night’s Forum for Candidates for Hightstown Borough Council. We would have liked to hear what he has to say in response to questions important to the voters who will choose their new or continuing council members.  The League conducts its non-partisan forums as a service to the community as part of its mission to encourage informed, active participation in government. We work to make both registration and voting as straightforward and barrier-free as possible, and we encourage all potential voters to learn as much as possible about the stands of their candidates. We encourage all voters who could not attend the …

Watched this on television - too bad George didn't show up as he isn't even a choice now for us - we liked two of the three candidates and the way they think and the debate changed our mind as to who to vote for....we thought we knew until watching this....hopefully we will have a new council member....   more ›

Who Won The Presidential Debate?

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney duked it out in Denver, Colo.

President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney faced off in the first of three presidential debates Wednesday night. The debate was held at the University of Denver in Colorado. President Obama, 51, vying for his second term, was leading by four percentage points in a national poll over challenger Mitt Romney, 65, before the debate. However, political pundits and speculation on Huffington Post questioned whether the debate could change the standings. The candidates are expected to debate each other two more times - once on Oct. 16 and once on Oct. 22. The topics for those debates will be domestic policy on the 16th and foreign policy on the 22nd. Even a small bump from Wednesday night's domestic policy forum could make the …

Christie: 'Now Is Not My Time'

Governor says he will not be a candidate for GOP presidential nomination.

Saying that "now is not my time," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he will not seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012. Standing behind a lecturn in the Statehouse in Trenton, Christie said he believed he owed it to the people of New Jersey to continue as governor. "It's never felt right... to me in my gut to leave here when the job is not finished," he said. "New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you're stuck with me." But Christie did not rule out a run for the presidency in the future, telling an NBC News reporter that "I'm not going to preclude any job whether president or working at NBC." The governor had repeatedly said he would not join the GOP campaign, but reports continued to surface in recent …

Joe R is correct about top executives and CEOs. But the problem is more nuanced than he presented. The executives are both republicans and democrats; and the are executives of both private sector and public sector organizations. Let's just recap a few of the winners and losers in the recent recession: • Public sector union jobs increased. Private sector union members lost hundreds of thousands of…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Hightstown GOP Candidates Question Immigration Resolution

Borough Republicans plan a phone survey.

By John Archer and Skye Gilmartin, Republican Candidates for Hightstown Borough Council After several weeks of research, information gathering, and discussion, our Exploratory Committee (made up of a diverse, multi-cultural group of concerned residents) is close to completing its' task and is preparing a recommendation regarding Hightstown's "sanctuary city" label. To that end, all registered voters will be receiving a survey phone call this weekend to gauge public opinion on this issue. We ask for your participation in this public opinion poll on this very important topic. It is our opinion that Resolution 2005-66, unanimously passed by Borough Council in 2005, has created an atmosphere that not only conflicts with Federal Immigration …

Kudos Mike on the best response I've heard to date. Dave, I suspect the reason for people see this as racisim is that the assertions made in this letter are dubious at best. There is no evidence that we are any less safe. I read the police blotter; we are not awash in crime. Any decline in property values or economic stability is most assuredly a result of the housing downturn and recession. As …   more ›
