Three students from Kreps Middle School won certificates of recognition and gift certificates to Barnes and Noble for their submissions
Three students from Melvin H. Kreps Middle School were honored during last Tuesdays East Windsor Township Council meeting for winning the Suggestion Box contest. Sponsored by the township Clean Communities Committee, middle school students answered the essay question “How to Increase the Amount of Recycling in Our Community?” with written suggestions between 100 and 200 words. “We received some very thoughtful ideas from our students on this important subject,” said East Windsor Mayor Janice Mironov. “We are pleased to involve students in discussions about how to help protect and preserve our environment.” A committee made up of Clean Communities Chairperson Barry Fliegelman, Environmental Commission Chairperson Ronald Balint, and …

Power has been restored to all East Windsor schools, according to an announcement from the East Windsor Regional School District. Students should report to their school at the regular time on Tuesday. All schools have a half day Tuesday due to Election Day. Hightstown High School students will be following the “D” day schedule. The class periods for the day will be 4-2-3-8-6-7.

East Windsor Township Mayor Janice Mironov and the Township Clean Communities Committee are sponsoring their annual Suggestion Box Contest for all middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The Township asks, “How to Increase the Amount of Recycling in Our Community.” “We hope to receive some good productive ideas from our young people about an important subject in all of our communities, so as to help to better protect and preserve our environment,” Mironov said in a press release. Written suggestions must be between 100 and 200 words. First, second, and third place winners will receive gift certificates from Barnes and Noble in the amounts of $75, $50, and $25, respectively. One person at Melvin H. Kreps Middle School is confirmed to have Tuberculosis and 22 others were identified as needing testing, according to school officials. The health department notified the school on Wednesday and letters were sent home to parents Thursday, said Principal Lori Stein. She would not say if it was a student or faculty member, or what grade level, citing confidentiality. “The health department is not concerned and neither are we,” Stein said. “We don’t believe anyone here is in danger, has ever been in danger.” New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services spokesman Daniel Emmer said it is a suspected case of Tuberculosis, while the school said it is confirmed. Putting the day job aside, community leaders, business owners and elected officials were among those who stepped into a new set of shoes for the day, as teachers. Kreps Middle School Student Joleigha Howland, who founded B.U.L.L.i.E.D, donated money to the Tyler Clementi Point Scholarship of the Point Foundation at a dinner Tuesday at Americana Diner. Derrick Miller-Handley, the student receiving the donation through the fund, was at the dinner with Howland, along with Michael Marino, the development director at the Point Foundation. "The dinner was at the Americana and we will continue to raise money and awareness and give to various causes including continuing to help Derrick with his studies," said Tara Howland, Joleigha's mother, in an email Wednesday. By the end of January, B.U.L.L.i.E.D had raised more than $1,000 and sold around 350 bracelets to raise awareness about bullying in schools.

There wasn’t one moment that triggered Joleigha Howland to start fighting against bullying, but after a few small ideas and three short months, she had raised over $1,000 to donate to the cause. In October last year, 11-year-old Howland, with the help of her mother, Tara Howland, created a Facebook group called B.U.L.L.i.E.D after seeing kids being bullied. The group had 552 members as of Wednesday night. The idea was to offer support for kids who are bullied, and the group description provides additional websites and phone numbers for helplines. “I’m trying my hardest to just make this much bigger, with bigger consequences [for bullying],” Joleigha said. Hightstown High School students placed in the top three at the county level.
Students from both Hightstown High School and Kreps Middle School were recognized at Monday’s Board of Education meeting for placing at the local and district level in the VFW’s annual essay contests. Superintendent Edward Forsthoffer and Board of Education Vice President Kennedy Paul announced the winners and presented them with a certificate. At the high school level students competed for the Voice of Democracy essay contest, and placed in the top three at the district level.
