Letter to the Editor: Red Light Camera Program Has Failed

Republican Sen. Michael J. Doherty from the 23rd District is sponsoring legislation that would ban the use of red light cameras in New Jersey

A new report from the state Department of Transportation confirms what many opponents of red light camera ticketing systems have long suspected: cameras lead to more accidents, more injuries and greater cost. The report contains data showing that both the total number and total cost of crashes have increased at intersections after cameras were installed. The commonly stated goal of red light cameras is to reduce injuries from right-angle crashes, generally the most dangerous type of collision that results from running a red light. At the 24 intersections in New Jersey that have had cameras operational for at least one full year (including a red light camera at the intersection of Route 130 and Dutch Neck Road that was installed at the end …

Letter to the Editor: Red Light Cameras Causing Progress in New Jersey

David Kelly is the Executive Director of the National Coalition for Safer Roads and Former Acting Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

A recent report on red-light safety cameras from the New Jersey Department of Transportation has surfaced vocal camera program opponents who are not taking into consideration the bigger picture.  Important statistics — that any traffic safety expert would see as positive progress — aren’t getting the attention they deserve. The bottom line is citations are down, the often fatal right-angle “t-bone” crashes have decreased and these trends continue to rise at intersections where red-light safety cameras have been operational for two years. Camera programs are implemented with the sole purpose of positively changing driver behavior to make intersections and roadways a safer place for residents to walk, cycle and drive. Adjustments to bad …

Letter to the Editor: Support Tom Connolly and Cindy Smithers

Cranbury resident Natalie Patchel expresses support for Township Committee candidates Tom Connolly and Cindy Smithers

To the Editor, I have been a resident of Cranbury for over ten years and will support Tom Connolly and Cindy Smithers for Township Committee. My endorsement of Tom Connolly is based on my belief that Tom will challenge the status quo and push for increased fiscal responsibility within Cranbury government. Tom is a life-long resident of Cranbury and has a vested interest and a devotion to this community and its residents. I have known Cindy for nine years and have had the opportunity to work with her on numerous occasions as volunteers for the Cranbury School.  Her dedication and willingness to work to enhance the school that our children attend is a strong indication that her interest in improving our community is genuine. She will bring…

Letter to the Editor: Re-elect David Cook and Jay Taylor for Cranbury Township Committee

Cranbury residents Joan and Tom Weidner express support for Township Committee candidates Jay Taylor and David Cook

To the Editor, We urge Cranbury citizens to vote to re-elect Dave Cook and Jay Taylor for Cranbury Township Committee on November 6, 2012 at Town Hall. Before explaining why, we applaud all four candidates–Tom Connolly, Dave Cook, Cynthia Smithers and Jay Taylor–for taking the time and effort to run for the Township Committee. That commitment is the essence of our democracy and gives voters a choice in this election. We believe Jay and Dave are the best candidates because they have the experience and a proven track record that demonstrate their ability to handle complex problems such as the upcoming Supreme Court decision that will define our Mt. Laurel housing obligations. They have also shown their commitment to preserve farmland and …

Letter to the Editor: Kudos to Hightstown Diner During Hard Times

Hightstown resident thanks Hightstown Diner for its service after Hurricane Sandy

To the Editor, The Hightstown diner never lost power during the entire time of Hurricane Sandy. It was a really bright star reaching out to many people around the area. We met people there from Bayhead as they were going to work through here–FedEx drivers–and they said there was not one place to buy coffee all the way until they came to the Hightstown Diner. We met people from Clearbook and Rossmoor who had never been there before and were happy to find a place to go. The main thing I want to emphasize is the employees at the diner and the owner Terry went above and beyond and were always pleasant and provided great service. This has always been one of the best places in Hightstown, and really offered a sanctuary for many people. They …

Letter to the Editor: Still In the Cold and Dark

East Windsor resident asks for more communication from power company and township

To the Editor, I live in East Windsor off of Conover Road off of Stonehedge Road. We are still in the dark and cold, even though others around us have power back. On Conover Road the tree that had been blocking the road hasn't been cleared in four days. I'm not sure if that's a part of our problem, but I'm sure it continues to be quite dangerous. The thing that really frustrates me is the complete lack of any information from either JCP&L or from East Windsor Township. Just having some feedback would eleviate much of our uncertainty. Please post on your websites your current plans for our area and the status of repair plans for the areas still not being served. I understand we need to be patient, but your response will be most …

I agree that the libraries should have been open. Had the County had an emergency response plan in place, they could have opened the libraries, as many, many other towns who could, did. There were quite a number of local staff who would have come in with or without pay to staff the library for limited hours and services. The employees are smart, they are capable and they were willing. A plan has …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Larry Quattrone for Council

Hightstown Democratic Club member expresses support for Councilman Larry Quattrone

To the Editor, Having served with Larry Quattrone for seven years while I was on the Hightstown Borough Council, I found him to be an understanding, hard-working councilman who found time to leave his local business to meet with town officials, fellow council members, and the mayor to address problems that require immediate attention. Mr. Quattrone is a "hands-on" person who pitches in when needed. He served faithfully on many subcommittees that required much time and patience. Where would the annual Memorial Day Parade, a community favorite for Hightstown and East Windsor, be without his organizational skills? Mr. Quattrone also possesses institutional experience, namely the history of negotiations, proposed out-sourcing, and the inner …

Letter to the Editor: Larry Quattrone and Denny Hansen for Council

Hightstown resident Torry Watkins expresses support for Councilman Larry Quattrone and candidate Denny Hansen

To the Editor, When you vote for Hightstown Council candidates this year, please consider Larry Quattrone and Denny Hansen.  Larry is the obvious choice for reelection this year. He is Hightstown's indispensable man. His record of concern for and dedication to the people of our town is unprecedented. He has worked tirelessly for all of us. Consider just one instance: the flooding from Hurricane Irene, when Larry WAS the municipal government, working to relocate police operations, to bring the water and sewer treatment plants back on line, and to give assistance to all of our residents and businesses who needed it. Larry wants to continue to serve us, and we should give him–and ourselves–this opportunity. And, for the first time that I …

Letter to the Editor: Unfair Tactics in Hightstown Borough Council Election

Hightstown Democratic Club member laments candidate sign removal

To the Editor, I was hoping for at least one campaign without illegal sign removal. Three lawn signs for Larry Quattrone and Gail Doran were removed by unknown parties. I have reported the matter to the police. It seems most unfortunate that these nasty tactics are at play, which subvert the democratic process. Fairness dictates that we respect each person's right to express his or her political opinion without fear or intimidation. -Walter L. Sikorski  Sikorski is a member of the Hightstown Democratic Club and former chairman of the Hightstown Democratic Municipal Committee.

Letter to the Editor: Re-elect Gail Doran to Hightstown Council

4th District Hightstown Democratic Committeewoman Lisa Thibault expresses support for Hightstown Borough Council candidate Gail Doran

Dear editor, Hightstown is fortunate to have a councilmember who has demonstrated the ability to methodically weigh all available options and facts before making an informed decision. This same councilmember has also shown that she can put the needs of others before her own. She has been able to achieve results by working cooperatively with other council members, even those who are across the purportedly great partisan divide. These are a few of the reasons why councilmember Gail Doran has my vote for re-election to the Hightstown Borough Council. She has been persistent in pursuing the information and facts necessary for a careful and reasoned plan to rebuild borough hall. She also voted to support re-fluoridation of our water supply, …
