NJ Forum Addresses School Safety After Newtown

“To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” -Theodore Roosevelt

School is about teaching more than English, math and science. It is also about building character, modeling behavior and nurturing all children. “What we do today and what we do after today honors the children of Newtown, but more importantly it honors the children in our schools today,” said Dr. Maurice Elias, director of clinical training at the Rutgers University Department of Psychology, a nationally recognized expert in community and preventive psychology and school intervention. Elias was the keynote speaker at a New Jersey School Boards Association forum, “Safe and Secure Schools: Perspectives after Newtown,” at The College of New Jersey on Friday morning. Hundreds of parents, educators, school board members and law enforcement …

One might also consider including a rep or two from the student body as well. When students feel such security measures are in place because adults care about their well being, they are more likely to play an active role in tipping off adults to possible brewing problems. Gun Control or No, Sportsmen Show is More Popular Than Ever

Crowds are expected at the Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen Show, to be held this week in Edison.

In the wake of the deadly schools shootings in Newtown, Connecticut last year, several guns shows in the area were called off. Because of New Jersey's restrictive gun ownership and transfer laws, the state doesn't have gun shows, per se, where firearms are bought and sold.  But New Jersey has the next best thing for the sportsman, a variety of outdoors and hunting shows. Despite the outcry over guns and push by politicians for even more restrictive gun control laws - and in some quarters, a compete ban on guns - the Garden State show, which is celebrating its 30th anniversy, exhibits few signs of losing its popularity. Thousands …

Why in the world would you have to advocate for retaining the Second Amendment? Is it in danger of being terminated? There is about as much chance of repealing the 2nd amendment as there is a chance of Wayne LaPierre accepting a ban on semi-…   more ›

Mary Sherlach, CT School Shooting Victim, Looked Ahead to Next Stage of Life

Sherlach was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the site of a deadly shooting rampage on Friday.

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ -- Mary Sherlach looked forward to spending more time on Owasco Lake during her retirement.  She and her husband, Bill, owned a cabin along the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.  Mary Sherlach was one year away from retirement.  But on Friday morning, her life ended in the second most deadly school shooting in American history.  Sherlach, 56, was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, where a gunman opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, according to reports. I've read most of the comments. There is one thing in common with all of the posts. Everyone is trying to make sense out of something that makes no sense. I am truely sorry for the loss of Mary and can't imagine what her family has gone through. Thank you Mary for choosing to be a School Psychologist and making a difference in children's lives.   more ›
