The pilot project restricting left turns and U-turns on Route 1 at Washington Road and Harrison Street will begin by Saturday, according the New Jersey Department of Transporation. The project will continue for approximately 12 weeks. The new traffic pattern will affect residents and commuters who travel in and out of Princeton. When the pilot begins, drivers will not be able to turn left from Route 1 north onto Harrison or Washington. Instead, drivers can use Alexander Road to go into Princeton, or Scudder’s Mill Road to Route 1 south. A pilot project to restrict left turns and U-turns on Route 1 at Washington Road and Harrison Street in West Windsor will begin on Monday, Aug. 6 and continue for approximately 12 weeks, according to the West Windsor Police Department. The new traffic pattern will affect residents and commuters who travel in and out of Princeton. When the pilot begins, drivers may no longer turn left from Route 1 north onto Harrison or Washington. Instead, drivers will be directed north to Scudder’s Mill Road and onto Route 1 south. Determining the success of the 12-week pilot program will be difficult to quantify, New Jersey DOT official says.
The left-hand jughandle that turns off Route 1 north at Washington Road and Harrison Street in West Windsor will close for 12 weeks beginning either July 30 or Aug. 6, according to Joseph Dee, director of communications at the state's Department of Transportation. The pilot program aims to reduce congestion along Route 1 north through Lawrenceville, West Windsor and Plainsboro, and is expected to affect the roadway from Lawrenceville through to South Brunswick. What’s still unclear is what will determine the project’s success or failure. West Windsor police report two people were flown from the scene in helicopters to Trenton trauma center.
A couple from New Brunswick, Canada, was injured when their motor home flipped after being struck on Route 1 in West Windsor on Monday afternoon. Verne and Louise Beers, of Lower Woodstock, were flown to Capital Health Regional Medical Center after being extricated from their overturned motor home. Shortly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Verne Beers, 68, was listed in serious condition and Louise Beers, 55, was listed in fair condition, according to a hospital spokesperson Don MacNeill. The Beers were driving a 1987 Ford motor home north on Route 1 when they were struck at 3:29 p.m. by a 2006 Kia driven by Fady Abdelhady, 22, of King of Prussia, Pa., just north of the Quakerbridge Road overpass, said Sgt. Just another project that sounds good during meetings or coffee breaks but no pe-established measurements for determining if it is moving in the right direction. Why would we want the DOT to have thought this through before implementing it? Just hopeful I guess.
