In the weeks and months following the Newtown, CT, mass killing, much of the attention in schools has been on lockdown drills and how they can be practiced and adjusted to prevent or at least minimize casualties in the event of an armed intruder. They’re tough questions, but growing all too real. And there are others: Are teachers and staff prepared to respond protect themselves and their children? 'Multifaceted approach to violence' stresses treatment for mentally ill, not jail-time.
New Jersey would declare violence a public health crisis and establish a commission to study its causes under a bill announced by state Sen. Raymond J. Lesniak (D-Union) on Wednesday. The measure also would expand mental health programs and recommend that the federal government adopt gun control measures in the wake of the Newtown, CT massacre. “We want to do whatever’s possible to avoid something like that,” Lesniak said. In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced plans to reintroduce high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the 113th Congress. Lautenberg’s bill, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, would prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. The deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, claimed the life of a Patch writer's family member. Mary Sherlach, the school's psychologist, was among 26 people, including 20 children, who died when a gunman opened fire at the school Friday morning. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also died in the rampage. Sherlach was the mother-in-law of Deptford resident Eric Schwartz, a longtime Patch freelancer who covers high school sports in South Jersey. Sherlach, 56, lived in Trumbull, CT. The man identified in media reports Friday as the shooter in the second deadliest school shooting in American history has told friends that he thinks his developmentally disabled brother may have committed the crime, Patch has learned. A close friend of Ryan Lanza who requested to not be identified told Patch that he spoke to Lanza as he was making his way home from work to Hoboken.
