PAL Thunder 9U All-Stars Softball Team Wins Championship

The team played undefeated in the four tournament games.

The East Windsor PAL Thunder 9U All-Stars softball team took home the win in the championship game held Saturday, going undefeated in all four games of the tournament.  During the final championship game, the girls beat Robbinsville Blue 13-1. Earlier in the week they beat Robbinsville Gold, Bordentown Gold and Robbinsville Blue in the double-elimination tournament.  “The girls played nearly error-free ball in the final game, and every player on the team hit the ball very well,” Manager Rob Bridgman said in an email. Last summer most of the girls on the current team played on the team that came out on top of the District 12 8U championship game, Bridgman said.    “So far, they are following in the footsteps of their ‘big sisters,’ the East…

Poll: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A New York Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for them?

Newsflash! The price of everything has gone up. Is $40 really that much for a helmet? $52 for a pair of cleats...you're lucky to find a regular pair of shoes for $30-35. Hey, I remember paying 25 cents for a slice of pizza; that same slice is now over $2. Welcome to 2012.   more ›

Hightstown Boys Cross Country Off to 7-1 Start

Mintz proves to be a key new runner.

The Hightstown High School boys cross country team is off to another great start. With its three wins in a quad meet on Sept. 27, Hightstown improved to 7-1 on the season. Hightstown defeated Allentown (20-38), Notre Dame (27-30) and Ewing (19-44). "This is kind of the same place we were last year," Hightstown Coach Tom McCafferty said. "We're 7-1 going into the weekend of the Shore Coaches Invitational." The surprising part of Hightstown's success is the Rams have been able to keep winning without Ashwin Narayan in the lineup. "He figured to be our number two runner and he is still hurt," McCafferty said. "We're hoping to get him back for the championship races." Fortunately, not all of Hightstown's luck has been bad. "Zander Mintz, a …

Hightstown High Names Sports Award Winners

The Rams give nods to hard work on and off the field.

The Hightstown High School athletic department completed another season recently. Thanks to the exploits of Aziza Ahmed and Angel Guzman, the athletic season lasted almost until graduation day. Guzman and Ahmed advanced to track's Meet of Champions. Other teams won conference titles. Many athletes were honored with All-County nods. "Overall, I thought it was a pretty good year," said Don Hess, who coaches girls' soccer and track and boys' basketball at the school. "We won some conference championships and had some great kids." Every year, Hightstown High honors its own with its annual sports awards. "[Hightstown High School Athletic Director] Gary Bushelli really does a great job with the awards," Hess said. "I think it's great they have …

Lenzo is Hightstown's Female Athlete of the Year

She played soccer, track and lacrosse.

If anyone ever wondered how to go from East Windsor to Collegeville, Pa., they can either go to Mapquest or they can just follow the Lenzo family. With two children set to be attending Ursinus College in the fall, the Lenzos have the route memorized. Jessica Lenzo will be entering the school as a freshman in the fall. Angela Lenzo, her sister, will be a senior at the school. "I didn't go there because of my sister, but that is how I found out about the school," Jessica Lenzo said. "I visited 10 or 11 other schools and I liked it better than all of them." Lenzo said she liked the way the campus looked. She liked the soccer team. She liked the science department. As it turned out, Lenzo and Ursinus both had impressive credentials and were a …

Monahan Named Male Athlete of Year

The Hightstown High School grad was a standout in baseball and football.

You don't have to be the Hightstown High School Athlete of the Year to attend Ursinus College. Then again, it doesn't hurt. Kevin Monahan and Jessica Lenzo, the two Hightstown High Athletes of the Year,  have both elected to attend Ursinus. "It's just a coincidence," Monahan said. "It's a small school, very personalized with the instructors. I like that." Monahan will also get a chance to continue his football career at the quarterback position, something he did the for past two years at Hightstown High. "Quarterback is the only position I can ever play," Monahan said. "I'm better at throwing the ball. I don't have a problem being vocal. I also like being able to take things into my own hands if I need." Monahan stressed that he loves …
