Hightstown Police Increase Patrols During Holidays

The holiday season is upon us, and that means joy and merriment–and increased crime.

If the Home Alone movies taught us anything–apart from how to booby trap one’s home–it’s that burgalars and robbers sure like to ruin the holidays. To prevent and deter criminal activity during the upcoming holiday season, Hightstown Police Director James Le Tellier said the Hightstown Police Department will increase both directed and foot patrols during peak hours in the downtown area beginning Thanksgiving. According to a press release from Le Tellier, police will be on the lookout for shoplifters and suspicious persons loitering by parked cars or in parking lots. Police will patrol all parking lots to ensure they are safe for shoppers, diners, employees, business owners, and residents, he said. These lots include Main Street Lot, …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash     Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let…

Cranberry Sauce: Turkey Topper and Table Talk

Easy to make and it travels well, bringing Garden State history to the table.

When the hosts take up your offer to bring something for Thanksgiving, do it Garden State-style with homemade cranberry sauce. This dish is pretty and almost as easy as opening a can. It also tells a story of New Jersey history, which might be useful table talk at Thanksgiving dinner. Cranberries have grown in New Jersey for centuries. One of the earliest written references is a letter from emigrant Mahon Stacy. Writing to his brother in 1680, Stacy said, "We have from the time called May until Michaelmas a great store of very good wild fruits as strawberries, cranberries and hurtleberries. The cranberries, much like cherries for color and bigness, may be kept until fruit comes in again. An excellent sauce is made of them for venison, …

ShopRite Lowers Spending Threshold to Get Free Turkeys

It used to be $400. But because of Hurricane Sandy, all you have to do is spend $300 by November 22, and you can get a free turkey for your holiday table.

It's all to help people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. ShopRite has lowered the amount shoppers must spend in order to qualify for a free Thanksgiving turkey, according to Supermarket News.  The traditional ShopRite turkeyfest happens once a year. During that time, shoppers who spend a certain amount of money can pick up a free turkey for their Thanksgiving table. This year, the supermarket recognizes that people who were affected by the recent hurricane probably didn't have food shopping on their minds - especially with areas of central New Jersey not having electricity, in some cases, for more than a week. The free turkey threshold was $400. ShopRite has changed that to $300, Supermarket News reports. The promotion, which runs from …

What New Jersey's Doing with Thanksgiving Leftovers

A turkey sandwich is just so lame. Try these ideas from around the state.

The feast is over and everyone has had a good night's sleep fueled by an excess of food and drink. So what to do with the leftovers? We asked our own staffers and their friends and neighbors and of course, being Patch, scoured the Web, to find out what Jersey does the day after the feast. Of course, there's a turkey sandwich. But why not make it a bit more Jersey-specific, with a turkey Sloppy Joe? First, a bit of history: cooking enthusiast Ben Salmon explains the history of how the sandwich was invented in South Orange and rates three local purveyors. But now on to the recipe, complete with homemade Russian dressing. Ben has lots of other good ideas for leftovers, including what sounds to us like a Thanksgiving Dagwood. Want a more …
