Season opening Sept. 10 at Cherokee Classic.
While the Hightstown High girls cross country team did lose one of its best runners to graduation, the talent and experience coming back has Coach Tom McCafferty excited. "We lost Megan Mitchell, but I still have the rest of the team coming back," McCafferty said. "They all made great improvements over the track season. Hopefully, that will transfer into the cross country season." Cross country runners have one big advantage over the athletes in other sports at a school like Hightstown High. Hightstown has winter and spring track teams. After the cross country season ends, the runners can continue in distance events the rest of the school year. Hannah Foss, a sophomore, kept running after last year's cross country season ended. "She was …

This Hightstown High School junior and track team member is looking for a better 2012 year.
Aziza Ahmed has tried many different ways to throw the discus. What she has learned in that time is that it really helps when you know what you're doing. Ahmed started throwing the discus at Melvin H. Kreps Middle School. When she thought back on those times, she couldn't help but laugh. "I didn't really know what I was doing," Ahmed said. "I was throwing maybe 65 feet at Kreps. I think they were just trying to keep it simple for everyone there." Once she started at Hightstown High School, Ahmed saw a quick bump to about 80 feet. "We concentrated on the discus more," Ahmed said. "We were throwing before, but we learned different things in high school." One of the things Ahmed learned was how to utilize her height. She stands six feet tall…

The Hightstown High School junior advances in discus.
While six girls in each event knew right away that they had qualified for The Meet of Champions by placing in the Central Jersey Group III track event, a lot of other people were put in a holding pattern. That included Hightstown High School junior Aziza Ahmed. In addition to the top six finishers in each event, held June 3 and 4 at South Plainfield, the next six best finishers from all of the groups also qualified for The Meet of Champions, which will take place Thursday at Old Bridge. Aziza Ahmed placed eighth in the discus with a distance of 112' 7". "You go on the [New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association] website and it tells you who made it," Hightstown Coach Don Hess said. "We got finished at about 1:30 p.m. and found …

The Hightstown High School senior makes the event as a wild card in discus.
The top six finishers in each event at the Central Jersey Group III track meets this past weekend automatically qualified for The Meet of Champions. Everyone else has to wait for the results from all of the other meets to come in to see if they made it as a wild card. After a bit of a wait, Hightstown High's Angel Guzman learned he will be one of the wild cards in the discus. "You love to see someone who works so hard and cares so much get a second chance," Hightstown Coach Jim Firtek said. Guzman placed seventh in the discus (140' 10") while competing in the Group III meet, held June 3 and 4 at South Plainfield. Guzman advances on to The Meet of Champions, which will be held on Thursday at Old Bridge. "He knows he didn't throw his best, …

Ahmed and Obst are hoping to make the Meet of Champions.
Aziza Ahmed and Dana Obst have both qualified for the Group III championships, keeping the season alive for the Hightstown High School girls track team. The two girls competed in the Central Jersey Group III meet this past weekend at Monmouth Regional. The top six girls in each event advance on to the Group III finals, which will be held Friday and Saturday at South Plainfield High School. "I was expecting we would qualify more, but it was a draining couple of days on the kids," Hightstown Coach Don Hess said. "It was so hot out there." Ahmed placed fourth in discus with a distance of 112' 11". "That was Aziza's personal best by about eight feet," Hess noted. "You can do things like that in the throwing events. If you get all pumped up and…

Hightstown High School's 4x400 team and Lawrence and Dermody also move forward.
Angel Guzman is having a great season for the Hightstown High School boys track team. If he can ever find a way to get away from Hopewell's Sam Snyder, it would be even better. Guzman placed second in both the shot put (46' 11 1/2") and discus (155' 8") while competing in the Central Jersey Group III championships, held this past weekend at Monmouth Regional. Guzman trailed just Snyder in both events. The same thing also happened in the Mercer County Championships two weeks ago. "It was a real good weekend for him," Hightstown Coach Jim Firtek said of the championships. "He really wanted to make groups in both events. We'll see what happens next weekend." The top six finishers in each event advance on to the Group III finals, which will be…

The Rams will start states this weekend.
After its first two events in the biggest regular season meet of the year, the Hightstown High School girls track team was in a big hole. But by the end of its recent meet against Nottingham, the Hightstown girls were loving life in the Valley. Hightstown defeated Nottingham, 80.66-59.33, on May 19 to clinch the Valley Division championship. Hightstown went 3-0 in the Valley, including wins against Princeton (73-67) and Hamilton (124-16). "We were down 17-1 after the first two events and I was thinking it might be a long day," Hightstown Coach Don Hess said. "Fortunately, our team is young, talented and it doesn't like to lose. They always fight back." Hightstown finished strong in the final three events — the 200, 3200 and 4x400. "It was …
