Veterans Day: Traditionally Sunday, Celebrated Monday

No matter the calendar date, it is a day of remembrance and thanks.

Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know? This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12.  The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the …

Veterans Day 2012: Local Activities and Deals

Local government and businesses pay tribute to military veterans

  This Sunday, Nov. 11, we celebrate Veterans Day, a national holiday to pay tribute to our military personnel serving or who have served in armed conflicts. Hightstown Borough and Cranbury Township offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of the holiday. East Windsor Township offices will remain open, and the township council meeting will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. East Windsor Regional Schools and Cranbury School will be open Monday.
