A Monroe man who struck a utility pole on Route 130 in East Windsor on Thursday has been pronounced dead, according to police. Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center staff announced that Anthony Saer, 72, died at approximately 12:07 p.m. on Sunday, March 17. Saer experienced a medical event preceding the accident which caused his car to leave the road, hit a utility pole, and overturn. The week of April 21-27 will be declared Hightstown Volunteer Appreciation Week in a resolution to be introduced by Councilman Rob Thibault at the Borough Council’s April 1, 2013 meeting. Councilman Thibault will also present Borough volunteers with personalized Certificates of Recognition and lapel pins, a tradition he started in 2012 to thank volunteers …

The office is located next to Party City in the Town Center Shopping Center on Route 130 South. Stanley Krulikowski, 67, of Tobyhanna, PA, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Compassionate Care Hospice, Trenton. Born in Newark, NJ, Stanley was a longtime resident of the Allentown and Hamilton areas before retiring to Tobyhanna. A graduate of Seton Hall University, Stanley retired in 1999 as postmaster from the Hightstown Post Office after a 26-year career with the federal government. Mayor Janice S. Pedro Lopez, of East Windsor, was arrested on Friday, Feb. 22 and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon stemming from a fight that broke out at the park on Westfield Road, East Windsor Police reported. Cranbury Township is set to begin an extensive rehabilitation project on the Brainerd Lake dam and bridge in hopes of reducing the ongoing impact from flooding. While the project will not completely solve flooding issues from the lake, the work is expected to mitigate some of the problems caused by the aging structure, which is over 100 years old. East Windsor Police responded to a shoplifting complaint at Target on Saturday, Feb. 9. Two Hightstown juveniles were seen removing security devices from several electronic items by store personnel. East Windsor police arrested an East Windsor resident of the Windsor Castle apartments for allegedly dealing drugs out of his apartment. Police executed a search warrant at Pedro Lopez’s address on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 31. Several ounces of marijuana, scales, packaging materials, non-prescribed prescription narcotics, and a set of brass knuckles were seized in the investigation from Lopez’s apartment, according to police. The Hightstown Borough Council has postponed making a decision on what to do about Borough Hall, according to centraljersey.com. The icy, pitch black waters of the Hudson River was probably the last place Christopher Smidt of Edison thought he was going to be when he started out on a sightseeing tour Jan. 27. On Sunday night, 43-year-old Smidt had taken a ride in a small plane piloted by Deniece Depriester Kok of East Windsor. Alexander Abeel, 23, of Monroe Township, and Shane Colvell, 23, of Hightstown, were arrested by Hightstown Borough Police around 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8 after police responded to investigate a report about a suspicious vehicle in the rear parking lot of St. Anthony’s Church on Maxwell Avenue in Hightstown. Abeel, the driver of the vehicle, threw a baggie out of the car window as he lowered the window to speak to an approaching officer. The baggie, police determined, contained remnants of marijuana. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a partially-smoked cigar with marijuana in it. A single- family home on Westfield Road was destroyed by fire Monday evening. East Windsor Fire companies 1 and 2 responded to the fire at approximately 10:30 p.m. and found flames and heavy smoke engulfing the rear of the single family home. The fire spread rapidly and the first floor collapsed, according to the fire department. East Windsor's property tax bills hovered around the state average in 2012, but the rate of increase from 2011 to 2012 was higher than the average throughout New Jersey. From 2011 to 2012, East Windsor taxes increased 4.3 percent; taxes throughout the state increased an average of 1.7 percent between 2011 and 2012. As part its annual pipeline maintenance program, New Jersey American Water will temporarily change the water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant in Bridgewater and its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant in Somerset from a chloramine (a combination of ammonia and chlorine) to free chlorine. The change will begin on Jan. 7 and last through February. During this time period, Cranbury customers may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water.
