Brainerd Lake Dam Project to Address Flooding Issues

Approximately $3 million project expected to begin in May.

Cranbury Township is set to begin an extensive rehabilitation project on the Brainerd Lake dam and bridge in hopes of reducing the ongoing impact from flooding. While the project will not completely solve flooding issues from the lake, the work is expected to mitigate some of the problems caused by the aging structure, which is over 100 years old. "Unlike typical new construction made of iron and concrete, the Cranbury dam is an old Earth and wood structure," said Township Committeeman David Cook. "We got to a point where we had to address some of the age issues, so that's what we're doing now. We're working with the county to retrofit the bridge, roadway, and spillway to allow more water to pass from the east side underneath the bridge to…

‘Significant’ Seepage Found in Dam, Cranbury’s Lake Drained for Safety

A $3 million dam rehabilitation project had been scheduled to start this year.

Cranbury's Brainerd Lake was drained Wednesday after a “significant” amount of water was seeping through the dam around the spillway, according to officials. The DEP’s Dam Safety Department, the county's engineering department and consultants, Cranbury staff members and Mayor David Cook, met at the dam Wednesday and determined the water was getting through the west side of the bridge’s foundation.  “The inspection revealed significant seepage on downstream side of the dam adjacent to culvert, not flowing through the culvert, but under and through the downstream masonry wall,” said DEP spokesman Larry Hajna, noting that before the lake was drained the water level had dropped a foot. The lake was drained to avoid damage under the roadbed and…

Cranbury to Clear Unwanted Vegetation Out of Brainerd Lake

The project will last for five days this week, finishing on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

With vegetation increasing throughout Brainerd Lake in Cranbury, a company has been called in to remove specific plants that could eventually deplete oxygen in the water, according to officials.  Princeton Hydro will be working on the lake beginning Monday for five days, removing lily pads and fanwort through a process called hydro-raking, which uses a claw-shaped machine to pull unwanted plants out by the root, said township committee member Susan Goetz. The vegetation will be put on a barge, removed at Village Park and sent on Public Works trucks to a local farm where it will be used as fertilizer. “I think its necessary for the aesthetic, the recreational and the environmental quality of this lake, which is a key component to the …

Cranbury's Brainerd Lake Dam Repairs Moving Forward

The potential for reducing flooding in town is an incentive behind the project, engineers said.

Brainerd Lake dam in Cranbury will get long overdue repairs, with bids requests for the project being planned for the fall. Engineers from Najarian Associate, who were hired by Middlesex County, presented the project at the Feb. 27 Township Committee meeting. The dam repairs will reduce flooding in the area, but the project was not intended to prevent flooding.  “This is a dam-rehabilitation project, not a flood-control project,” said Vajira Gunawardana, an engineer at Najarian Associates. Some of the project’s repairs include increasing the 36-foot spillway to 100 feet, removing the concrete beach, replacing upstream wall and cap, and laying concrete blocks covered in soil to help with erosion, according to Gunawardana. The plan also …
